Rolling Stone Covers

In a New York City press conference and on the cover of Issue No. 49, in November of 1969, Mick Jagger promised San Francisco a free concert.  Altamont Speedway, not San Francisco, got the concert and the result was a well-attended gathering at a dirt track in the hills east of the city, a concert that might have been “Woodstock West” but in the end is remembered for the violence and the accidental deaths which occurred on that cold, damp day.
